The Grand Mathematics Quiz
The Grand Mathematics Quiz (GMQ, edition 1) has wrapped up and we will be back again with another edition of fun, learning, friendly competition and applying math in everyday life (May 2027, date to be finalised).
Based on the feedback we received, we will only have an indoor event in the next edition.
Thanks to everyone, especially participants, attendees, sponsors and volunteers for making edition 1 of GMQ a big success.
I am also grateful to our guest speakers Hon Minister Andrew Leigh (MP), Tejas Sapate, Jo Clay (MLA) and Dr. David Hartley who spoke on how mathematics can be applied and adopted across various Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, enabling fervour and renewed enthusiasm among the participants and attendees.

Guest Speakers
The Hon Dr Andrew Leigh MP
Andrew Leigh is an economist, author, and the Australian Labor Party politician who has served as the Federal Member for Fenner in the Australian Capital Territory since 2010. He is currently the Assistant Minister for Productivity, Competition, Charities and Treasury in the Albanese Government.
Hon Minister Jo Clay MLA
A lifelong Canberran and environmental advocate, she has a background in law, business, recycling, and community activism, and is committed to climate action, sustainable development, and building a more inclusive and resilient Canberra. Jo Clay MLA is the ACT Greens Leader and Member for Ginninderra.
Dr David Hartley
Dr. David Hartley is a lecturer at the University of Canberra and an experienced mathematician and educator. He completed undergraduate studies in Science and Engineering and earned a PhD in Mathematics from Monash University in 2014, with research focused on the stability of stationary solutions to curvature flows. Dr. Hartley has contributed to mathematics education and student support, and his research interests lie in geometry and mathematical analysis.
Tejas Sapate
Tejas Sapate is a Community Engagement Manager at Community Bank Canberra and Regions part of Bendigo Bank, where he works closely with local communities, businesses, and organisations to strengthen community partnerships and support initiatives that create positive community outcomes.

Hemant Kumar Mulmudi PhD
Hemant is a passionate and experienced mathematics and chemistry tutor on Superprof.
He has worked in several public service agencies in Canberra and has a PhD in engineering with more than 10 years of experience as a researcher in both Australian and overseas universities.
He loves organising mathematics quizzes and in 2025 he volunteered as a team coordinator guiding three teams at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
